Music Composers Who Died Strange Deaths

Death is inevitable and is basically a part of life. It may come quickly or slowly to some, while strange and unexpected to others.

And speaking of such, odd deaths have been recorded all throughout history. Here, we’ll talk about the music composers who died strange deaths.

•    Jean-Baptiste Lully – he is a famous French composer during the Baroque era. Lully created masterpieces for opera, ballet and comedies, and is also King Louis XIV’s favorite court composer. During his Te Deum performance, Lully struck his foot with his pointed staff (used to keep time). He refused to get the wound treated and eventually it was infected with gangrene, which caused his death on March 1687.

•    Alexander Scriabin – a Great Russian composer during the turn of the 20th century. It is said that Scriabin accidentally cut his lip from shaving, in which an infection occurred. Alexander Scriabin died due to Septicemia.

•    Anton von Webern – he is an influential Austrian composer who is also popular for using the twelve tone system of music by Schoenberg. Webern went out to enjoy a cigar and to avoid waking up his grandchildren; he was oblivious of the Allied forces’ established curfew, and was shot dead by an American soldier named Raymond Bell on September 15, 1945. Bell was traumatized and overcome with grief by that event and 10 years later died of alcoholism.

•    Hugo Wolf – he is a German prolific song writer known for his Lieder song cycles. Then in the early 1897, Wolf showed signs of mental derangement due to syphilis which leads to stop him from composing. He attempted suicide by drowning himself, admitted to an insane asylum and then died there in 1903.

•    Ernest Chausson – a famous French Romantic composer for orchestra and violin. At the age of 44, he went out for a bicycle ride outside his Limay property when he suddenly lost control on a slope downhill, crashing into a brick wall and causing his instant death.

These are just some of the many composers who died strange deaths. Do you have any you can add on to the list too?
