Songs Connected To Suicide

Music can wake many emotions in a man. It can bring out the happiest and brightest side of us, and it can also draw out our deep dark side.

In connection to what’s mentioned above, below is a list of some songs known to be connected to suicide.

Gloomy Sunday – this is also known as the Hungarian Suicide Song. It was composed by Rezső Seress in 1933. There have been many urban legends surrounding this song over the years and radio networks even banned it in. Some reports tell that there have been at least 19 suicides in America and Hungary connected to this song, but there are verification difficulties. However, the composer Seress committed suicide by choking himself to death with a wire in a hospital in January 1968.

Adam’s Song – it is a 2000 single by the band Blink 182 which reached #2 on the US Modern Rock Tracks. This is probably the only serious song from Blink 182. It tells about the innocence of childhood and depression of teenagers. Tom DeLonge, the band’s guitarist said that the story behind the song was of a kid who sent Mark (lead singer) an email before committing suicide.

How To Save A Life – is a hit single by the American rock band The Fray. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. According to the band’s lead singer Isaac Slade, the song was inspired by his experience at a camp for troubled teens as a mentor. He was paired with a 17 year old back then who lost his friends and was going through depression, which is similar to what the song is about. Slade even got an email about the song of a boy who died in a car crash and the song was played at his funeral.

Fade to Black – this song is the first ballad by the heavy metal band Metallica. Part of the lyrics goes:  Life it seems will fade away. Drifting further every day. Getting lost within myself. Nothing matters no one else. I have lost the will to live. Simply nothing more to give... In a 2003 interview of drummer Lars Ulrich, he recalled how the vocalist James Hetfield was “obsessed with death” when the song was produced. Hetfield also commented on an interview that Fade to Black is indeed a suicide song and they received a lot of hostility about it, as people think kids kill themselves because of the song.

Beyond The Realms of Death – it is a 1978 song by the British metal band called Judas Priest from their album Stained Class. It was written by their vocalist Rob Halford. The song tells about the depression of a person and death probably by suicide.

Now, we’re not saying these songs can induce suicidal thoughts; it’s just a plain discussion on how the songs mentioned above were related to the subject of suicide.
