The Rock n’ Roll music genre has always been somewhat out of this world. The lyrics are always wild and out of control. By this definition, Rock n’ Roll does not escape the tales of urban legends. Some of these tales are listed below.
Waylon Jennings and Buddy Holly
The Day the Music Died is always known in history as the day of the plane crash which killed the trio Richie Valens, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly. Many people did not know that Waylon Jennings was supposed to be in that flight, as the bass player in Holly’s band. Jennings got on the bus instead and gave up his seat to the Big Bopper. Before the said flight, Holly said jokingly to Jennings “I hope your ol’ bus freezes up!” which Jennings also jokingly replied “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes!” And it really did. Waylon blamed himself for this his entire life. But in reality, it was due to bad weather and pilot error and has nothing to do with Waylon cursing Holly.
311 is KKK
According to urban legends, the alternative rock band’s name 311 stands for KKK as it is the eleventh letter in the alphabet. Naturally, the band’s haters during the 90’s have associated codes and numerology as their way of showing dislike. However, is never related to racism or hate at all, but just a regular rock band. The band name was actually taken from a standard police code for indecent exposure in Nebraska in which the original guitarist, Nick Hexum, was arrested.
Ohio Players “Love Rollercoaster” is About a Scream of Someone Dying
This urban legends spawned many versions. Some thought it has a sound of a scream from someone falling off the rollercoaster, a scream of a murdered woman in the studio, a 911 call from a psych ward and many others. But whichever version you hear, Love Rollercoaster is popular plainly because of its upbeat and groovy sound.
Gene Simmons is Part Cow
It as ridiculous as it seems, KISS’s vocalist, Simmons did not escape the tale of urban legends. Some people believed that Simmons had a cow’s tongue attached surgically to his own. But in reality, medical technology in the 70’s was not capable of attaching any part of an animal to a human. Simmons just simply has an abnormally large tongue.
